The module aims to introduce students to the major theories and research in the field of Health Psychology. The topics covered will focus on how psychological processes can contribute towards maintenance of physical health, higher disease risk and disease prevention and management. The biopsychosocial model will be explored in depth across lectures illustrating the interplay of biological, social and psychological factors that are relevant to health and illness. Lecturers will draw particular attention to research methodology and study designs used in Health Psychology and will familiarise students with challenges associated with studying health and illness. In addition to introducing students to current evidence and theory in Health Psychology, the module aims to illustrate how Health Psychology research is put into practice in real life settings. Students interested in physical health or health behaviours (e.g. sleep, eating habits), and those hoping to pursue a postgraduate training in Health or Clinical Psychology will find this module particularly useful.

This module aims to enable students to develop a grasp of some of the important debates that underpin psychology as a discipline. The module will focus on the core psychological problem of consciousness exploring it from a variety of perspectives (e.g. social constructionist, phenomenological, cognitive, biological, evolutionary, artificial intelligence). In addition, the interplay between consciousness, self and the brain will be explored. The module will encompass debates between different perspectives on the core topic and in so doing seek to develop an understanding of and a capacity to evaluate the ideas that underpin these different perspectives.
