Summer 2025 Media Practice (FDY-C068-0)
Summer 2025
Academic Year: Academic Year 2025-2026
Students will learn some technical skills, accompanied with reading and interpretation of images and media practices. You are asked to use digital technology to question notions the authenticity of the image in contemporary society. Overtly manipulated images prompt us to flights of fantasy, to imagine utopias and play with psychologies. With the ever-increasing public accessibility to image manipulation software, apps and filters, the authenticity of the image has never been more in question. Students develop skills in practical application of ideas, process and themes within media practice and learn the ways in which images are constructed and manipulated. This module proposes that it is not the camera that makes the image, the camera operator and often the subject does. The image creator makes a series of conscious and unconscious decisions which relate to our preconceived ideas of what the image’s meaning is. Further, when importing and ‘improving’ the image in software such as Photoshop, students have an opportunity to manipulate the image, changing it significantly from the original.
