Aims & Objectives

The module enables students to improve their communication skills in both oral and written academic discourse so that the students with Level B1–B2 in English become more familiar with how to develop, practise and use vocabulary and grammar to communicate more appropriately and comfortably in a variety of academic and professional settings as well as enhance presentation skills by preparing and delivering a professional presentation using appropriate language. Particular emphasis is placed on developing techniques to write and communicate in an academic format, and be aware of form and structure, while focusing on the nuances of style and register in both written and spoken contexts.

Activities involved

  • Moodle with interactive exercises and tasks
  • Interactive teaching with input sessions
  • Improvisation and role play activities using real-life scenarios
  • Online feedback sessions in which participants reflect on their own progress and receive comprehensive advice on the improvement of various aspects

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module students will know:

  • which tools and techniques to use to write academic texts;
  • how to linguistically and stylistically design academic texts respectively to academic ethics and integrity principles;
  • how to write different types of essays in terms of their content, structure, spelling, punctuation, lexical and grammatical peculiarities;
  • how to analyse and edit academic texts;
  • how to write a summary, a cover letter, and an abstract;
  • how to work on an industry-specific (field-related) text: summary, review, and editing;
  • how to build and make an effective presentation.

Course Aims 

  • Provide student leaders with training that will allow them to excel in the roles and improve the student experience at the University of Roehampton 

  • Improve graduate outcomes by enabling student leaders to assess which competencies are important for their career plans after university, and develop relevant hard and soft skills, as well as showing them how they can articulate and transfer them to future job seeking activities (CVs, Cover Letters, LinkedIn and so forth) 

  • Allow student leaders to consider their values and how that can shape their future career and life journey
